Neuhausen, Switzerland – 16, August 2016– Tyco Fire Protection Products is pleased to announce that its Port Arthur manufacturing and service center has been certified by Tyco as a “Zero Waste to Landfill” site. Port Arthur is Tyco’s first facility in the US, and Tyco Fire Protection Products’ 6th facility in the world, to attain this certification.
“I would like to congratulate the entire Port Arthur team on this achievement; especially as they are Tyco’s first North American site to achieve Zero Landfill status. Attaining Zero Landfill is detailed work, and requires the dedication of all employees. At this site, it was especially challenging as they regularly host guests from all over the world in their training center. Their commitment to taking care of their local environment is remarkable,” said John Perkins, Sr. Director, EHS Global Products, Tyco.
Opened in 2013, the Port Arthur facility is a 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art center dedicated to the WILLIAMS FIRE & HAZARD CONTROL (WF&HC) industrial incident response team, and the manufacturing and distribution for the innovative WF&HC firefighting foam equipment. The Port Arthur training center hosts many special events, like Foam School, throughout the year that could generate increased waste. Following the new Zero Waste to Landfill process will keep over 450,000 lbs. (225 tons) of waste per year out of landfills. Waste streams at this site range from used cutting oil sent for fuel blending; fluorescent lights sent to be reclaimed; and used absorbents, washer fluid, scrap metal, and office paper that are sent for recycling.
The Zero Waste to Landfill journey began for the Port Arthur site in 2015. The local team began by diverting waste from plant trash, cardboard, lumber, and plastic, using best available technologies and techniques to sort and recycle waste materials. This year, the team began a new effort to include all remaining lunchroom / restroom waste in the recycling program as well.
In addition to the Zero Waste to Landfill sites, Tyco also has several sites with third party certification in both ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 for their environmental and safety systems. In 2015, Tyco Fire Protection Products was honored with the Corporate Environmental award by the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy in the US.
