Innovative Solution to Fighting High Rise Fires

Tyco Fire Protection Products’ high rise nozzle, developed through extensive research, is being introduced to fire services across the UK.

Fighting fire in high rise environments has always been a challenge for fire and rescue services. Complicated by the difficulties of working at height, such operations are further impeded by the loss of output pressure as the firefighter ascends.

To overcome these challenges, a North West fire service conducted a two-year research programme into solutions which could meet the difficulties of fighting fires in high rise environments. This included identifying the vital criteria for equipment used in high rise fire events. Meanwhile, external studies carried out by the Building Disaster Assessment Group (BDAG) revealed that maintaining consistent water pressure and flow through the use of a specialist nozzle is key for success in these operations.

Responding to these challenges, Akron Brass and Tyco Fire Protection Products worked hard to understand the issues with firefighting at height and design a nozzle which meets the needs of fire services in the UK. This combination of research and live trials resulted in the development of a low pressure, larger flow nozzle which was evaluated and selected by a North West fire service.

“Not only is the product suitable for general fire fighting situations as well as high rise and high risk environments, it also eliminates the need to change nozzles, saving essential minutes in critical situations,” explained Steve Birch, UK business development manager UK and Northern Europe, Akron Brass Co. “This reduces the number of nozzles fire services would need to purchase, saving money in both equipment and maintenance costs. It also benefits from simple operation so there is no need for specialist training.”

Thanks to the many benefits of the high rise nozzle, this unique product will be introduced to all fire services in the UK and is currently being trialled by two of the largest brigades.
